How Search Engines Work

Most people these days type in the address of a search engine, type in their query terms, hit submit and reap the benefits of some serious behind-the-scenes work. It’s easy to miss what’s going on behind the scenes of a search engine’s functionality – and as a regular, run-of-the-mill Internet user, why should you care? Unless you’re a marketing firm, advertising agency, web-hosting platform or other affiliated, digital marketing services, odds are you don’t care or even think about how a search engine works – but firsthand knowledge of the uniquely complex algorithms used by sites like Google, Yahoo, and Bing can help you bring your business into the 21st century – and quickly!

So how does a search engine work?

Search engines perform two simple, basic services: crawling and indexing, and providing answers to search queries.

Ok wait, slow down. Crawling and indexing?

The core service a search engine does is to crawl and index. Imagine a baby crawling on the floor, making their way through a pile of scattered toys: got it? As they crawl across the floor they’re taking note of all of the toys on the floor; the location of each one, what color they are, what activities the toys are used form and so on so that they can report that information to the next person who asks. That’s exactly what a search engine’s team of robot crawlers (really just a computer functioning according to code or program) do all day long. They scan website’s metadata, content, and context, then rank that page based on certain criteria. Just like the baby crawling on the floor, a search engine retains that information so that when someone enters a certain search query, their results pop up instantly!

So where does the ‘providing answers’ service fit in here?

Every time a user hits the submit button on a search engine, a page of results pops up within seconds giving the user an overwhelming amount of data to sift through. Fortunately for the user, during the crawling and indexing phase the engine has already ranked that information based on relevance – just so you don’t have to go through millions of pages! When a company boasts their ability to get you to the top of a search result page, this is what they’re talking about! And think about it, do you want to click through hundreds of page results to find what you need, or would you rather click through maybe the top 2-3? Thanks to the algorithms used for ranking and indexing, search engines are a great ‘provider of answers’ for anything you can imagine (as long as it’s on the internet, of course).
